Welcome to Upsilon Omega Chapter
Welcome to the official website of the Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®.
Greetings,
In 1925, Upsilon Omega Chapter was chartered in Richmond, Virginia, making it the first
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® chapter to be established in the Richmond
Metropolitan area. We salute Upsilon Omega's founders: Sydney Mayo Brown, Zenobia
Henderson Gilpin, Ruth Thomas Hargrave, Leah Virginia Lewis, and Gladys Powell, for their
vision and goals. Over the past 95 years, Sorors have sustained joy in sisterhood, leadership, and
service to humankind.
We continue to thrive through service programs for women, men, and youth throughout the
Richmond area. Initiatives addressing families, mentoring youth development, and supporting the arts, education, health and wellness, economic security, and civic involvement comprise the chapter's rich legacy.
Welcome to our website to learn about our illustrious history and other pertinent information. Our programs and activities carry out the mission and goals of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, under the leadership of our International President, Dr. Glenda Glover. As Upsilon Omega implements the Program Targets under the theme "Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service"; we address the following target areas: HBCU for life and the signature program #CAP, Women's Healthcare and Wellness, Building Our economic Legacy,
The Arts! and Global Impact. Our chapter also has signature programs including the Debutante Project, established in 1954 and Future Young Leaders which was started in 2011.
Virtual learning and meetings have become standard for 2021, and as we work graciously with
our International Team, we look forward to the following upcoming Impact Days in
2021-22:
AKA International Day of Prayer Observance, National HBCU Week, Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and AKA Caregivers Day Observance. Our website will feature additional information concerning these events closer to their observances.
As members of the first Black sorority for college-trained African American women, we work to uplift the community and provide services to enhance the lives of others. Join and support us in our mission! We are grateful to our partners in the Richmond area for contributing to the success of our community service endeavors. Thank you for visiting our website.
Sincerely,
Daisy D. Greene, President
